COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS (March 21, 2022):
Dr. San Andres, the Mast-Childs Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University and a long-standing researcher of the Turbomachinery Laboratory at the Texas A&M University Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) is slated to receive the 2022 Aircraft Engine Technology Award. The award is presented by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to an individual who exhibits sustained personal creative contributions to aircraft engine technology in the areas of aircraft engine design, and/or research and development in the fields of combustion and fuels, heat transfer, manufacturing materials, and metallurgy.
Dr. Keun Ryu, the Director of the Turbomachinery Laboratory at Hayang University of South Korea, nominated Dr. San Andres for the award. He comments, his award nomination “is based on Dr. San Andres’ exceptional contribution to the field of structures and dynamics, in particular squeeze film dampers (SFDs) for aircraft engines.”
Through 30 years conducting funded research at TEES Turbomachinery Laboratory, Dr. San Andres and his students have produced experimentally verified models of squeeze film dampers for aircraft engines, hybrid bearings for cryogenic turbomachinery pumps, nonlinear dynamics of turbochargers, gas foil bearings for oil-free machinery, lubricated bearings for high-performance turbomachinery, and multiple-phase flow seals for wet gas compressors.
San Andres holds a Suma Cum Laude Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the Escuela Politecnica in Ecuador, and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Master of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He earned a doctorate from Texas A&M University and joined the university to educate students on vibrations, rotordynamics, and lubrication.
San Andres is a fellow of ASME, the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, and the Global Power Propulsion Society. He is also a member of the Industrial Advisory Committees for the renowned Turbomachinery and Pump Symposia in Houston and its sister event, in Asia. He and students have authored over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals, with over a dozen recognized as best in class at various conferences.
The award will be given during the ASME Turbo Expo 2022 Turbomachinery Technical Conference & Exposition in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on June 13-17, 2022. San Andres will have the opportunity to present a lecture or technical session during the conference.
