Chicago, IL (October 2021): The Turbomachinery Laboratory at Texas A&M University proudly sponsored the 2021 Leadership in Reliability & Operations Award for the Empowering Women in Industry Conference. Amy Crosby, Director of Customer Experience at ABB, accepted the award at the October conference in Denver, Colorado.
The award is given to a nominee who shows leadership that is positively impacting those who work with her. Charli Matthews, Founder, and CEO of Empowering Brands and Host of the Empowering Industry Podcast created the award because it bolsters career development for women in male-dominated industries. She explains, “Women aren’t taught leadership in the same way and it looks very different in a male-dominated environment. It is wonderful when we meet leaders in our industry because we need more role models to emulate.”
Amy Crosby is just that, a role model for leadership in reliability and operations. Crosby is an electrical engineer and the Director of Customer Experience at ABB. She is passionate about helping women in STEM roles, and mentors both new hires to their fields and STEM professionals. She also serves on the Industry Advisory Board for electrical engineering at her undergraduate alma mater, Marquette University.
Crosby experienced a freak medical incident from an unknown heart condition and a falling accident, resulting in a pulmonary embolism and a stroke. She underwent major brain surgery and spent months in recovery to regain her speech and muscle movement in her face and legs. Common actions like eating and talking were difficult, and she was confined to a wheelchair then a walker before she was able to walk again. Despite this unexpected trial, she was determined to rehabilitate and get back to her life and career.
Three months later, Crosby surprised her husband by climbing the stairs. She states, “I’ve been told that where the stroke happened in my brain, I am a miracle, and it could have been a lot worse.”
Crosby says she is a lot more mindful of her experiences and strives to set and work towards new goals. Being a working but present mom has always been important to Crosby, as well as taking control of your perspective and facing challenges with a positive outlook. She enjoys being an inspiration to students and graduates alike, and you will regularly find her at high school career days or supporting women in the engineering industry.
Empowering Women in Industry is an annual, national conference and gala hosted by Empowering Brands. The 2022 conference will take place in New Orleans, LA on October 13, 2022.
